What to Expect First Hypnotherapy Session
If you’re wondering what to expect first hypnotherapy session, you’re not alone. You’ve been thinking about trying hypnotherapy for a while now. Maybe weeks. Maybe months. And you probably have a dozen questions running through your head:
Will I lose control? Will you make me do something embarrassing? What if it doesn’t work? What if I can’t be hypnotized?
I hear these questions every single day. And I want you to know something before we go any further: every one of those fears is completely normal — and completely unfounded.
I’ve been doing this full-time for over 12 years. I’ve sat across from hundreds of people who were just as nervous as you are right now. By the end of their first session, almost every single one of them said the same thing:
“That was nothing like what I expected. It was actually… relaxing.”
Let me walk you through exactly what happens so there are no surprises.
On This Page:
Let’s Start With What Hypnotherapy Is NOT
This isn’t what you’ve seen on stage or on TV. Nobody is going to swing a pocket watch in front of your face. You’re not going to cluck like a chicken. You won’t be unconscious, and you won’t say or do anything you don’t want to.
Here’s the truth: you go into a state of hypnosis several times a day without even realizing it. That moment right before you fall asleep, when your mind is drifting but you’re still aware? That’s it. That feeling you get when you’re completely absorbed in a movie and you forget you’re sitting on your couch? That’s a form of hypnosis too.
Clinical hypnotherapy is simply me guiding you into that same natural, relaxed state of focus — and then using it to help your mind accept the changes you’ve been trying to make on your own.
You remain aware. You remain in control. You can open your eyes and stop at any time. That’s not a disclaimer — it’s how hypnosis actually works.
What to Expect First Hypnotherapy Session: Step by Step
Your first visit with me is different from a follow-up session. It’s longer — usually 90 to 120 minutes — and it’s designed so I can really understand what’s going on in your life and what you want to change.
Here’s what to expect, step by step:
1. We Talk First
When you arrive at my office in Venice (or connect online), the first thing we do is just… talk. No hypnosis yet. This is your time to tell me what’s been going on — what you’ve tried, what hasn’t worked, and what you’re hoping to get out of this.
I’ll ask questions. You’ll ask questions. I’ll explain exactly how hypnotherapy works for your specific situation, whether that’s anxiety, smoking, weight, sleep, chronic pain, or something else entirely.
This part usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, and most people tell me it’s a relief just to be heard without judgment. There’s no rush. If you need more time, we take more time.
2. I Guide You Into Hypnosis
When you’re ready, I’ll have you get comfortable — you’ll be sitting in a recliner, not lying on a couch — and I’ll begin guiding you into that relaxed, focused state.
What does it feel like? Most of my clients describe it as:
- “Like that moment right before you fall asleep” — deeply relaxed but still aware
- “The most relaxed I’ve been in years” — your body lets go of tension you didn’t even know you were carrying
- “I could hear everything you said” — you’re not unconscious, you’re focused
- “It felt like 10 minutes but it was actually 45” — time tends to compress
There’s no “going under.” There’s no moment where you black out and wake up later. You’ll hear my voice the entire time. Some people notice their thoughts quieting down. Some feel a pleasant heaviness in their arms and legs. Some see colors or images. Everyone experiences it a little differently, and there’s no wrong way to do it.
3. Personalized Work for Your Goals
This is where the real change happens. While you’re in that relaxed, focused state, I use techniques tailored specifically to your situation.
If you’re here for anxiety, we work on retraining how your mind responds to stress — replacing the panic loop with calm, measured responses that become automatic.
If you’re here to quit smoking, we address the subconscious triggers and associations that keep pulling you back — not through willpower, but by changing how your mind relates to cigarettes at a fundamental level.
If you’re working on weight management, we target the emotional patterns behind overeating — the stress eating, the boredom eating, the “I deserve this” voice that overrides your goals.
Every session is different because every person is different. I don’t use scripts. I don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach. What I do is built around you.
4. We Debrief and You Leave With Tools
After I bring you back to full alertness — which takes about a minute and feels like waking up from the best nap of your life — we talk about what you experienced.
I’ll ask what you noticed. You’ll probably have questions. Most people are surprised by how aware they were, and by how good they feel.
Before you leave, I’ll give you:
- A recording of your session to reinforce the work at home
- Specific strategies you can use between sessions
- A clear picture of what comes next and how many sessions we’re looking at

What Happens After Your First Session
Most people feel a shift right away. Not a dramatic, movie-style transformation — but something quieter. A sense of calm they haven’t felt in a long time. A feeling that something has loosened up inside.
In the days that follow, clients commonly report:
- Sleeping better that first night
- Feeling less reactive to things that normally trigger stress
- Noticing that cravings feel less urgent
- Catching themselves responding differently to old patterns
Some changes are immediate. Some build over multiple sessions. It depends on what we’re working on and how long the patterns have been in place. I’m always honest with you about realistic expectations — I’d rather under-promise and over-deliver.
“Can I Actually Be Hypnotized?”
This is probably the most common question I get, and the answer is almost certainly yes.
If you can daydream, you can be hypnotized. If you’ve ever gotten lost in a book, zoned out during a drive, or been so focused on something that you lost track of time — you’ve already experienced the state we’re working with.
The only people who can’t be hypnotized are those who actively resist it or don’t want to be there. If you’re sitting in my chair because you want to make a change, you’ll do great.
And here’s something that surprises most people: the more intelligent and creative you are, the easier it tends to be. Hypnosis isn’t about being weak-minded or gullible. It’s about having a mind that’s capable of deep focus.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a session last?
Your first session runs 90 to 120 minutes because we spend time getting to know each other and I want to do a thorough job. Follow-up sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes. I never rush a session — when you’re in my office, you have my full attention.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what we’re working on. Smoking cessation, for example, can often be addressed in 1 to 3 sessions. Anxiety or weight management usually benefits from 4 to 6 sessions. Some people come for a single issue and we resolve it quickly. Others discover they want to work on multiple areas of their life. I’ll give you an honest recommendation after our first session — I’m not interested in keeping you coming back longer than you need to.
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes. Hypnotherapy has been recognized by the American Psychological Association as an evidence-based approach. It’s non-invasive, drug-free, and has no side effects. The worst thing that can happen is you get very relaxed and have a great nap. (It’s happened — and those clients still got results.)
What if I’ve tried therapy or medication and it didn’t work?
Many of my clients come to me after years of talk therapy, medication, or both. Those approaches aren’t wrong — they just work on different levels. Talk therapy and medication address the conscious mind. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious, where your habits, emotional responses, and automatic behaviors actually live. That’s why people often find hypnotherapy gets results when other approaches have plateaued.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. I work with clients in my Venice, Florida office and online via secure video. Online sessions are just as effective — you’re in your own comfortable space, which many people actually prefer. I work with clients across the entire United States and internationally.
How much does it cost?
I’d rather discuss pricing after we’ve talked about your specific situation, because the number of sessions varies. Your first step is a free strategy session where we figure out if hypnotherapy is the right fit for what you’re dealing with. No pressure, no commitment — just a conversation.
About Your Hypnotherapist
I’m Timothy G. Ryan — a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist (CCHt.) and Certified Instructor of Hypnotherapy (CIHt.) with over 500 hours of professional training from The Florida Institute of Hypnotherapy.
I’ve been doing this full-time for more than 12 years. Not part-time, not as a side practice — this is all I do, every day. I’ve worked with clients dealing with anxiety, depression, smoking, weight issues, chronic pain, PTSD, fears, phobias, sleep disorders, IBS, and more.
My approach is conversational, guided, and respectful. I meet you where you are, and I never push you faster than you’re ready to go. My job isn’t to “fix” you — it’s to help you access the resources your own mind already has.
If you’re nervous about trying this, that’s okay. Most of my clients were nervous too. And most of them will tell you their only regret is not starting sooner.
